Big Isle mom and pop nurseries will be hosting the Plant People Road Show on Saturday, October 28. It will take place at the Makaeo Pavilion at Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
According to the Big Island Gazette, the road show will offer the community the opportunity to talk directly to members of the local nursery community. The public is welcomed to ask questions and get advice that relates specifically to their growing location.
Visitors have the opportunity to explore exhibits organized by the Hawaii Ant Lab and the Big Island Invasive Species Committee, per the article. In Hawaii, October is designated as “Stop the Ant Month,” and a collaborative initiative involving multiple agencies is urging residents to gather and report ants found on their properties. This collective effort aims to identify and manage the proliferation of invasive little fire ants (LFA) and other destructive pest ants that might be newly introduced to the state.
The committee will offer insights into the latest developments regarding invasive species impacting Hawaii’s local gardens. They will also provide information about the Plant Pono Program, which promotes the utilization of native and non-invasive plants in landscaping.
This is the Plant People Road Show’s 9th show. A list of participating growers from around the island can be found in the release.
