U.S. Senators Mazie K. Hirono and Bill Cassidy have introduced a bill aimed at improving the efficiency and quality of health care services for American veterans. The proposed legislation, known as the Veterans Health Administration Policy Advisory Commission (VetPAC) Act, seeks to create a transparent review process for the operations of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

Senator Hirono emphasized the importance of this initiative by stating, “Veterans have made unimaginable sacrifices in service to our country and it is crucial that we continue working to ensure our veterans can access the high-quality health care they deserve.” She expressed pride in reintroducing the VetPAC Act, which aims to form an independent commission tasked with addressing challenges within the VHA.

The VetPAC would establish a 17-member commission composed of medical experts and veterans. Its responsibilities include ensuring continuous improvements in critical areas such as technology, staffing, and patient care. The commission would also be required to provide regular reports to Congress and conduct special studies upon request. Additionally, it would assess budget implications related to its recommendations.

Senator Hirono has been active in supporting veterans through various legislative efforts. Recently, she reintroduced the Filipino Veterans Family Reunification Act of 2025 to expedite visa processes for children of Filipino World War II veterans. In January, she put forward the Veterans Member Business Loan Act to expand capital access for veteran-owned small businesses by lifting lending caps on credit union member business loans. Last year, she introduced the Parity for Native Hawaiian Veterans Act aimed at making health care more affordable for Native Hawaiian veterans by eliminating copays and enabling direct reimbursement from VA.
