U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono has joined a group of bipartisan senators to introduce the Supporting the Abused by Learning Options to Navigate Survivor (SALONS) Stories Act. The legislation aims to encourage domestic violence awareness training for cosmetologists and beauty professionals.

Senator Hirono emphasized the importance of addressing domestic violence in Hawaii, stating, “With nearly 20 percent of Hawaii’s residents having experienced domestic violence, it’s critical we do more to prevent this violence and support survivors.” She added that the act would expand opportunities for beauty professionals to engage in such training, providing another avenue for survivors seeking help.

A study by the Hawaii State Coalition Against Domestic Violence revealed that approximately one in five residents in Hawaii have faced physical violence or threats. The survey highlighted higher rates among Native Hawaiian or Filipino individuals and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The proposed legislation would offer grants to states requiring cosmetologists to complete domestic violence awareness training. This initiative would enable victim service providers to train professionals on recognizing signs of abuse, responding appropriately, and referring clients to resources. The training may also cover sexual assault, stalking, and dating violence.

Statistics show that one in four women will experience domestic violence during their lifetime, with three women killed daily by intimate partners in the United States.

The SALONS Stories Act has received endorsements from organizations including the Professional Beauty Association, National Network to End Domestic Violence, National Domestic Violence Hotline, Shear Haven, YWCA USA, and YWCA Nashville.
