The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has received approval from the Land Board for a community-built comfort station at Hā‘ena State Park. This new facility aims to alleviate the strain on the existing bathroom near Kē‘ē Beach and the Kalalau Trailhead without impacting cultural sites in this environmentally sensitive area.

Curt Cottrell, Administrator of the Division of State Parks (DSP), stated, “Over the years, many people have commented on the lack of restroom facilities at the parking lot. It’s a five-to-15-minute walk to the comfort station near the beach. Moreover, the new station should reduce the number of people who head into the trees to relieve themselves, which will help protect the natural and cultural resources of Hā‘ena.”

During construction, parking spots will be limited. However, residents and visitors are expected to be accommodated through a modified parking plan and increased shuttle capacity.

Hui Makaʻāinana o Makana plans to transfer ownership of any newly constructed improvements to the state once completed.
