The Hawaiʻi Department of Health (DOH) addressed a fuel release incident at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Approximately 300 gallons of fuel were released at an underground pump house, but there is no ongoing threat to public health or the environment. The incident was not connected to the Navy Closure Task Force-Red Hill activities.
The Navy Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Pearl Harbor reported that the release happened on July 1 during maintenance work on a fuel line used for active fueling operations. The DOH responded to the situation around 1:30 p.m. on July 1 and revisited the site on July 2 to confirm clean-up efforts, which are expected to conclude today.
According to the DOH, the fuel spill was contained within concrete and appears to have been recovered without affecting the surrounding environment. Importantly, it did not occur near any underground drinking water sources.
