Hāmākua-Kohala Health, a federally qualified health center located in Hawaii, will host a Breast Cancer Awareness event at Honokaʻa Gym Complex on Nov. 3. The event, called Ladies Night Out, will feature free health screenings, massages, nail paintings, and more.
According to Hāmākua-Kohala Health, the event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission is free, and the Honokaʻa Gym Complex is located at 45-541 Lehua St, Honokaa, Hawaii.
This event is sponsored by Mahalo County Council member Heather Kimball. Ladies Night Out will also feature food and entertainment, in addition to the health-related activities.
As a federally qualified health center, Hāmākua-Kohala Health receives funds from the U.S. Federal Government Bureau of Primary Health Care in order to “provide comprehensive, culturally competent, quality primary health care to medically under-served communities and vulnerable populations.”
According to their website, Hāmākua-Kohala Health has locations on the big island of Hawaii on the Hāmākua Coast, Laupāhoehoe, Waimea, and in Kapa’au, on the Kohala Coast. As a nonprofit community-owned organization, their board of directors is composed of people from the communities it serves. They are “held to rigorous performance and accountability standards, including administrative, clinical, and financial operations.”
This event will be held on the heels of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. According to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, one in eight women and one in 833 men living in the United States will develop breast cancer during their lifetimes. It is expected that in 2023, over 300,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and raising awareness is key to early detection and life-saving measures.
