The Hawai‘i State Council on Developmental Disabilities (DD Council) will hold its annual Day at the Capitol event on March 4, 2026, in recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The gathering is expected to bring together about 500 self-advocates, family members, service providers, and advocates. The goal is to increase awareness of the abilities and strengths of individuals with developmental disabilities.

This year’s theme for the event is “We All Have Different Faces, Come from Different Places, and All of Our Voices Shall be Heard!” Organizers say the theme underscores the importance of respect, participation, and opportunities for all people regardless of ability. Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is part of a national campaign aimed at increasing understanding and highlighting the contributions that individuals with developmental disabilities make in communities.

“This year’s theme reminds us that respect and inclusion are fundamental values that strengthen our entire community,” said DD Council Executive Administrator Daintry Bartoldus. “We encourage people to get to know individuals with developmental disabilities, recognize their talents, and work together to create a more inclusive Hawai‘i.”

The event comes as Hawaii’s state government continues efforts to support vulnerable communities through social recovery programs after events such as wildfires. According to the official website, these efforts include honoring veterans and educators while expanding healthcare access and housing initiatives for residents. The Governor’s office also works on affordability through tax reforms and promotes renewable energy as part of broader policy priorities.

Hawaii’s leadership has stated its commitment to collaboration across sectors to address issues like homelessness by framing it as a health care matter, supporting safe housing options, fostering statewide cooperation on climate change policies, and aiding wildfire-impacted regions such as Lahaina (official website).

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month activities like Day at the Capitol reflect ongoing statewide initiatives focused on inclusivity alongside other public policy goals in Hawaii.
