The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) Maui Food Safety Branch has closed the Maui Beach Ballroom, located at 170 W. Kaʻahumanu Ave. in Kahului, following a routine inspection on January 6, 2026. The closure was due to a cockroach infestation found within the kitchen area.

During the inspection, DOH staff observed a significant presence of cockroaches on food contact surfaces and equipment. Both juvenile and adult cockroaches were present, with egg cases also noted.

The DOH has required the establishment to complete several corrective actions before reopening. These include contacting a professional pest control company to establish treatment and monitoring plans, sealing and repairing cracks along the floor line, and cleaning all kitchen surfaces to remove grease and debris buildup.

The Maui Beach Ballroom must remain closed until all violations are corrected. A follow-up inspection is scheduled for January 8, 2026.

According to the department: “The DOH Food Safety Branch protects and promotes the health of Hawai‘i residents and visitors through education of food industry workers and regulation of food establishments statewide. The branch conducts routine health inspections of food establishments where food products are prepared, manufactured, distributed or sold.”

“The branch also investigates sources of foodborne illnesses and potential adulteration. It is also responsible for mitigating the effects of these incidents to prevent any future occurrences. The DOH food safety specialists strive to work with business owners, food service workers and the food industry to ensure safe food preparation and employee hygiene practices.”

The Hawaii State Department of Health provides statewide programs aimed at improving health outcomes through disease prevention, environmental protection, public health preparedness, and community wellness initiatives as outlined on its official website. The department operates offices across multiple islands in Hawaii.
