Hawaii State Film Commissioner Donne Dawson will retire from the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism on April 30, concluding a 25-year tenure leading the Hawaii Film Office and overseeing the state’s film program.

Dawson’s retirement marks a significant transition for Hawaii’s film industry, which has grown under her leadership. The governor said that Dawson “brought a combination of industry savvy, love for community and deep knowledge of and sensitivity toward her native Hawaiian culture and Hawai‘i’s fragile environment.” He added, “That unique combination helped Donne balance the needs of demanding productions with the needs of our communities.”

James Kunane Tokioka, director of DBEDT, said, “We are grateful for Donne’s dedicated service as a loyal public servant to the state of Hawai‘i for the past quarter century. She has been a strong advocate for Hawai‘i’s film industry, local creatives and the many professionals who have helped build this important sector of our economy.” Throughout her career, Dawson played an important role in promoting Hawaii as a filming destination while supporting local workforce development. Tokioka also said, “While Donne’s retirement marks the end of an important chapter, she leaves behind a valuable foundation that will continue to benefit the industry going forward.”
