U.S. Senators Mazie K. Hirono and Jerry Moran have introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at enhancing memorialization and burial benefits for veterans and their families. Senator Hirono emphasized the importance of honoring veterans’ stories, stating, “These veterans have unique, but too often untold stories—stories that deserve to be shared now and into the future.”

The Honoring Veterans’ Legacies and Burial Benefits Enhancements Act proposes the establishment of a nonprofit entity that can accept private donations to support the Veterans Legacy Program (VLP). Through VLP grants, educational partners would conduct research projects on veterans buried in national cemeteries to share their stories through educational programs. The legislation also aims to ensure dignified and honorable veteran burials, as well as enhance burial benefits for dependents and historical Medal of Honor recipients.

Notably, the bill has garnered support from various organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the American Legion. These groups, along with others, have shown their backing for the initiative, recognizing its potential to preserve and honor the legacies of veterans.

Senator Hirono, a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, has been a consistent advocate for veterans’ rights. Her efforts have been instrumental in passing legislation that benefits veterans, such as the Korean American VALOR Act, which extends healthcare services to veterans who served in the Republic of Korea during the Vietnam War and later became U.S. citizens. Additionally, a bill introduced by Senator Hirono led to the creation of a VA Advisory Committee to address the needs of veterans in various U.S. territories and Pacific Island nations.

The Honoring Veterans’ Legacies and Burial Benefits Enhancements Act underscores a bipartisan commitment to improving the memorialization and burial benefits for veterans, ensuring that their contributions and sacrifices are appropriately recognized and honored.
