U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) issued a statement following her vote in favor of legislation to fund key government agencies and prevent a partial government shutdown. The measure provides Congress with two additional weeks to negotiate reforms concerning U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
“The lawlessness of this regime is rampant and grows more dangerous by the day. Tonight, I voted to give Congress two weeks to negotiate immediate, common-sense guardrails to rein in the lawlessness of ICE and CBP, such as requiring officers to take off the masks and ending the roving patrols terrorizing our communities. Over the next two week, the onus will be on Republicans to agree to the serious reforms Democrats are demanding. I will continue my work fighting for other reforms, including giving people the ability to hold lawless government agents accountable,” Hirono said.
The funding bill aims to maintain operations at federal agencies while lawmakers discuss possible changes related to immigration enforcement practices.
