U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono, alongside Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock and 19 other lawmakers, has initiated a bipartisan effort to seek answers from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth regarding the quality and accessibility of food provided to servicemembers on military bases. This move follows reports highlighting issues with food quality at Army installations, such as Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, where financial discrepancies were noted between funds collected from soldiers and those spent on food.
The letter addressed to Secretary Hegseth expresses concern over the Department of Defense’s underinvestment in food options for military personnel, emphasizing its impact on military readiness and retention rates. “Through your experience as a junior officer, you can empathize with the importance of a reliable, nutritious dining facility, and its importance to morale,” the lawmakers wrote.
The letter highlights how poor-quality meals affect servicemembers’ performance during training exercises. It also points out that shortages and inconsistent adherence to nutrition policies disproportionately affect junior enlisted servicemembers living in unaccompanied housing.
Lawmakers stressed that Congress provides servicemembers with food allowances to help them afford meals. They argued that if government-provided meals result in paycheck deductions through Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS), then those funds should be used exclusively for meal costs and improvements.
“Our servicemembers are the best among us and expect fair compensation from their government,” they continued. The oversight letter includes questions for Secretary Hegseth about funding decisions for food service operations and how the Department plans to improve meal quality across military facilities.
