U.S. Senators Mazie K. Hirono and Gary Peters, alongside U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley, have reintroduced a resolution to honor abortion providers by designating March 10, 2025, as “Abortion Provider Appreciation Day.” The resolution aims to recognize the vital role these providers play in offering reproductive care amidst various challenges including political interference and threats to personal safety.
Senator Hirono stated, “As we commemorate Abortion Provider Appreciation Day, we honor the bravery of these health professionals who provide crucial care to thousands of people across the country every day.” Senator Peters added that since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, medical professionals have faced increased threats but continue their work.
Representative Pressley emphasized the importance of supporting abortion providers against violence and harassment incited by political figures. She expressed gratitude for their perseverance in delivering essential healthcare.
The initiative was inspired by Dr. David Gunn, an abortion provider murdered outside his clinic in Pensacola, Florida. His children spoke about his legacy and commitment to reproductive rights during the announcement of this resolution.
The resolution underscores Congress’s commitment to ensuring the safety and ability of abortion providers to offer necessary care without fear or threat. It also condemns recent Supreme Court decisions limiting access to abortion care.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Alexis McGill Johnson acknowledged the daily efforts of abortion providers despite facing numerous challenges. Dr. Jamila Perritt from Physicians for Reproductive Health highlighted the need for complex models of care centered on community needs.
Brittany Fonteno from National Abortion Federation stressed continued support for resources and security for providers amid ongoing protests and stigmatization. Poonam Dreyfus-Pai from National Network of Abortion Funds called for unequivocal support for those facilitating access to abortion services.
Jackii Wang from National Women’s Law Center honored the resilience and dedication of abortion providers while emphasizing their critical role in ensuring access to necessary healthcare.
The resolution is backed by several organizations including Planned Parenthood Federation of America; National Women’s Law Center; National Abortion Federation; Physicians for Reproductive Health; among others. It has gained co-sponsorship from multiple senators and representatives committed to advocating for reproductive rights.
