The Circuit Court of the Second Circuit, which includes Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi, is currently seeking applicants for the position of independent grand jury counsel. This role is essential as outlined in Article I, Section 11 of the Constitution of the State of Hawaiʻi. The provision mandates that whenever a grand jury is convened, an independent counsel must be appointed to provide guidance on matters presented before it.
The selection process for this position follows the guidelines set by Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes (§612-51 to §612-57). The chief justice of the state supreme court is responsible for appointing grand jury counsel across the state’s four judicial circuits. Eligible candidates must be licensed to practice law in Hawaiʻi and cannot be public employees.
