U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono has voted against the confirmation of Kash Patel as the next Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). As a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Hirono voiced her opposition to Patel’s nomination, expressing concerns about his potential disregard for constitutional principles and allegiance to former President Donald Trump.
During her Senate floor speech, Hirono remarked on Trump’s perception of himself as “above the law” and his willingness to “weaponize” it for political purposes. She stated that Patel’s nomination poses risks to national safety and security and could undermine public trust in the FBI.
Senator Hirono had previously questioned Patel during his confirmation hearing regarding his stance on various issues, including misinformation about the 2020 presidential election and COVID-19 vaccine supplements. She also raised concerns about Patel’s alleged involvement with a list identifying individuals he deemed part of an “Executive Branch Deep State.”
Additionally, Hirono criticized Attorney General Pam Bondi’s formation of a “Weaponization Working Group,” intended to scrutinize those who investigated Trump. She condemned recent actions by the Trump Administration that led to significant dismissals within the FBI and Department of Justice.
“Our administrative agencies, and certainly the Department of Justice and the FBI do not exist to be used as tools for retribution by Donald Trump, Pam Bondi, or Kash Patel,” Hirono asserted. She emphasized that such purges threaten national security rather than enhance it.
Hirono concluded by urging her colleagues in the Senate to reject Patel’s nomination due to his perceived inability to distinguish between fact and fiction and his apparent loyalty solely to Trump.
