U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono took to the Senate floor to express her opposition to the confirmation of Russell Vought as Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Hirono, alongside other Democratic senators, voiced concerns about Vought’s past actions and his involvement in Project 2025.

“Mr. Vought is dangerous and he has a total disregard for the Constitution, Congress, and the millions of hardworking Americans impacted by decisions he will make at OMB,” said Hirono. She criticized Vought’s role in crafting Project 2025 and questioned his ability to prioritize constitutional loyalty over allegiance to President Trump.

Hirono also accused Trump of hypocrisy for appointing individuals linked to Project 2025 after claiming no connection during his campaign. She highlighted Vought’s history as Acting OMB Director during Trump’s first term, where he proposed significant budget cuts affecting Medicaid and social safety net programs.

“Where we spend our money reflects our priorities and our values,” continued Hirono. “Mr. Vought’s 2021 budget demonstrated that he sees no value in helping the American people.”

The senator further criticized Trump’s early administration actions, including a freeze on federal funds and an attempt to offer unauthorized buyouts to federal employees. She expressed concerns about data security due to Trump’s alleged empowerment of Elon Musk.

“Donald Trump ran on lowering costs for working Americans,” said Hirono. “In case there was any doubt, the last few weeks have shown that Trump never gave a rip about working people.”

Hirono argued that Project 2025 poses threats to American society, citing potential negative impacts outlined by Democracy Forward in their report on the project.

“I urge my colleagues to oppose his nomination,” concluded Hirono.
