U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono, alongside Senators Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Schumer, has initiated an investigation into reports of the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) alleged access to sensitive federal student loan data. The probe addresses concerns about DOGE staffers linked to Elon Musk potentially infiltrating the Department of Education and accessing personal information for millions of borrowers.

The senators’ letter to Acting Secretary Denise Carter highlights worries over “potential exposures of Americans’ private data” and possible violations by Trump Administration officials in handling this sensitive information. Reports suggest that young engineers associated with Musk’s companies might be bypassing security protocols within federal agencies.

The inquiry also questions whether DOGE-affiliated personnel’s access breaches the Privacy Act, which safeguards such information from unauthorized disclosure. The lawmakers express particular concern given President Trump’s intention to abolish the Department of Education, a move that could affect millions relying on its services.

In their letter, signed by 16 senators including Richard Blumenthal and Cory Booker, they demand answers by February 13, 2025, regarding DOGE’s access to student loan databases and any other sensitive data held by the department.

The full text of their communication raises several questions about who has been granted access to this data, what procedures were followed, and what measures are in place to prevent misuse or interference with federal aid disbursement.
