U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono has introduced a resolution in the Senate to commemorate November 20, 2024, as Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). The resolution was supported by 13 other senators. A similar bill was presented in the House by Representatives Pramila Jayapal, Sara Jacobs, and Mark Pocan.

Senator Hirono stated, "No one should have to live their lives in fear simply for existing as they are. With anti-transgender hate on the rise across the country, it is more important than ever that we protect and support transgender and gender-nonconforming communities." She added her commitment to raising awareness about discrimination faced by transgender communities and honoring those who have lost their lives due to violence.

The TDOR was established following the murder of Rita Hester, a transgender woman of color. Gwendolyn Ann Smith founded this day to honor Hester and others who have been victims of violence. The resolution acknowledges these losses both in the United States and globally.

The resolution saw cosponsorship from Senators Tammy Baldwin, Richard Blumenthal, Cory Booker, Tammy Duckworth, John Fetterman, Martin Heinrich, Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Alex Padilla, Brian Schatz, Elizabeth Warren, Peter Welch, and Ron Wyden.
