Two opossums were found and captured today at different locations in Honolulu Harbor, according to the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture. The department’s Biosecurity Plant Quarantine Branch responded after a shipping company reported seeing an opossum at Pier 1 around 6:45 a.m. Inspectors arrived within an hour and caught the animal with a pole and net after it hid under a shipping container.

A third opossum was also caught last month at Hilo Harbor.

Opossums are not native to Hawaii, and their presence can pose risks to local agriculture and ecosystems. The department continues its efforts to prevent the introduction of invasive species into the state.
