The Waimea Arts Council is set to host “Abstraction and Distraction” at the Firehouse Gallery, a showcase of Big Island artists’ works that delve into colors, shapes, lines, and textures as mediums for expressive freedom. The exhibition will be open from March 1 through March 31, inviting spectators to immerse themselves in the realm of abstract art.
According to an announcement by Go Hawaii, the gallery’s operating hours are from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. In celebration of the Waimea Arts Council’s 50th anniversary, it has been noted that the Firehouse Gallery will present a new exhibition each month. These exhibitions will feature pieces created by local artists and artisans, offering visitors a diverse range of original paintings, prints, greeting cards, and handmade jewelry.
Go Hawaii underscored painter Hans Hofmann’s statement: “What goes on in abstract art is the proclaiming of aesthetic principles… It is in our own time that we have become aware of pure aesthetic considerations. Art never can be imitation,” within their announcement.
As stated by Go Hawaii, the Waimea Arts Council is the oldest arts organization in North Hawaii and resides in the historic firehouse building situated within the Waimea Historic Corner Park.
