The Waimea Arts Council has announced the arrival of a new exhibit, “Abstraction and Distraction,” to the Firehouse Gallery. The exhibit is scheduled to be open throughout the month of March.
According to Go Hawaii, the “Abstraction and Distraction” exhibition will run from March 1 to March 31, 2024. Hosted by the Firehouse Gallery, it will welcome visitors every week from Thursday through Sunday, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The artwork on display will eschew realistic representation in favor of emphasizing colors, shapes, lines, and textures, thus allowing for unrestricted artistic expression. The announcement cites painter Hans Hofmann who said: “What goes on in abstract art is the proclaiming of aesthetic principles… It is in our own time that we have become aware of pure aesthetic considerations. Art never can be imitation.”
As stated on the Waimea Arts Council’s website, the council was established in 1974 with a mission to serve the local community. The Waimea Arts Council aims to foster appreciation for various fine arts such as music, dance, visual arts, and crafts within the community. It frequently hosts cultural events featuring both local talent and visiting artists.
