Kuleana Education Academy, a licensed nonprofit school in Holualoa, is redefining education for students in kindergarten through eighth grade by going beyond traditional academics. The curriculum aims to offer a well-rounded learning experience for its students by using social-emotional learning, mindfulness and their own practical experiences.

"At Kuleana Education, we believe in meeting every child where they are so they can succeed now and in the future,” said Dana Kern, co-founder, co-administrator, and full-time teacher at Kuleana Education.", said Dana Kern.

“At Kuleana Education, we believe in meeting every child where they are so they can succeed now and in the future,” said Dana Kern. “Our mission is to empower students through an individualized curriculum utilizing experiential learning.” The mission involves providing an environment encouraging exploration, community involvement and lifelong learning.

According to Kern, personalized learning is promoted for each student at the school allowing them to effectively learn core academic subjects at their own pace. Other subjects offered include Hawaiian studies, Japanese language, gardening, physical education and contributing to the school farm as electives.

Using diverse teaching methods allows the students at Kuleana to showcase understanding creatively. "We use varied teaching methods and projects to support student learning,” said Kern. Notable projects include the annual entrepreneur fair, science fair, multicultural day and life skills week.

In addition to creative teaching methods employed by the school it works on staffing teachers who take pride in its holistic learning approach. "We have an amazing team of educators who are all passionate about what we do," added Kern.

As per Kern's statement on community involvement it plays a crucial role in Kuleana Education's mission with various forms of encouragements given by the school. "One way we do this is through our weekly field trips where students visit places all over the island," mentioned Kern.

Projects such as helping at Kaloko-Honokohau Fishpongs, beach cleanups and partnerships with businesses like Big Island Bees and Hot Glass Hawaii underline the school's commitment to engaging with the local community.

On its approach towards application process Kuleana Education follows a personalized path. Applications are accepted through the school’s website on a first-come, first-serve basis. "Families interested in this unique educational experience are encouraged to reach out,” said Kern.
