Hawaii Fire Fighters Association issued the following announcement on Dec. 2.

Over  1,1400 acres of land was scorched over the weekend after sparks from a  welder ignited a fire in a grove of eucalyptus trees off Highway 190.

ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, #HICountyFF were dispatched to the blaze that closed Highway 190 near mile marker 9  due to heavy smoke and trees falling on the roadway.  The upper road  was closed for approximately 24 hours and Waikoloa Road to Highway 190  was also shut down on Saturday but reopened at 10 AM on Sunday.

At  the print of the article (11/30/2020 at 9:13 AM) according to Hawaii  Battalion Chief William Bergin, the flames jumped the highway and burned  a mile down Waikola Road.

Fire  fighters will be on scene for several days for hotspots and flareups of  the fire sparked by a welder as a property owner in the area was  welding pipes for a fence.

No injuries were reported.  #HICountyFF were helped by the Department of Transportation's Highway Division to  clear trees as well as the Pohauloa Training Area with resources as the  flames moved into their land and several volunteer fire fighters.
