The non-profit organization North Kohala Community Resource Center (NKCRC) is continuing to work in assisting organizations with preparing and submitting grant proposals to state, local and private foundations that bring value back to the North Kohala community.
These efforts allow NKCRC to provide support to local start-up businesses and nonprofits working in the areas of creating oral histories, earthquake repair and preparedness, and a wide range of other humanitarian efforts. Founded in 2002 and located on the northern tip of Hawaii Island, the NKCRC is focused on increasing its number of active community projects.
The long-term goal of the organization is to "operate sustainably by including the establishment of an endowment fund that will enhance our ability for long-term planning," the organization's website states.
Approximately 85% of all proposals submitted to NKCRC end up receiving funding after submissions go through the center on behalf of the project, the site claims. North Kohala is a "vibrant post-plantation community" with large inland area, and a population of approximately 6,300 residents that help fund many of the projects for which the center puts forth proposals.
"Our constituents are the project organizers that lead our many sponsored projects," NKCRC states on the website. "They represent a broad range of the community, including those locally born and raised, and transplants from the mainland. We build their capacity by teaching, coaching, supporting and accessing funding for these projects with a 501(c)3 fiscal umbrella. We are convinced that building the capacity of project organizers makes a big difference in our local quality of life."
Current projects and groups the NKCRC is assisting include the Affordable Housing Group, Aikido of Kohala, Art in Sight, Bond Library restoration, Camp Lokahi at Island Breeze Ministries and Give and Grow Discovery School.
