Over $278 million allocated for Capital Improvement Projects to 'invest in the future of Hawaii'

Gov. David Ige said that officials delivered over $278 million for Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) in March in an effort to fund crucial public infrastructure projects set to be complete all across the state.

Covered in the $278 million was almost $12 million for Hawaii Island projects. This included $1.278 million of $3.56 million for the development of a concrete water tank that will be located on the Hawaiian Homes Lands in Ka‘u. The project is said to be completed by July 2022.

“We’re doing at the local level what President Biden has proposed for the nation – strengthening infrastructure, improving public facilities and delivering good-paying jobs for our state,” Ige said in a press release. “Together, we are expanding opportunities and investing in the future of Hawaii. It is now more important than ever to reimagine and rebuild our communities while ensuring that disadvantaged groups previously impacted don’t get left behind.”

Also included in the total is $100,000 in general duty bond funds reallotted from tools to design infrastructure improvement projects within the Honalo Marshalling Yard. The plan is estimated to be $1.1 million. The project is said to be completed by June 2022.

The fire alarm system at Keaau High School will receive $175,000. The upgrade is expected to be completed by August 2022. Additionally, $90,000 will go toward the fire alarm system at Keaau Middle School. The projected completion date is August 2022.

A total of $140,000 will go toward the replacement of outdated air conditioners in the transportable classrooms at Keaukaha Elementary School. The projected completion date for that project is August 2022.

Moreover, about $500,000 of the $675,000 granted will go toward building administrative offices at the Kohala Hospital. The estimated completion date for that project is March 2022. Also, $475,000 will go toward upgrades and the replacement of the chiller at Hilo Medical Center. The projected completion date for that project is August 2021.

An estimated $300,000 is said to be going toward the design of a science facilities upgrade at Pahoa High and Intermediate School. The projected completion date is said to be in March 2022. Meanwhile, $8.93 million of the estimated $16.17 million will go toward the design and development of much-needed restroom restorations at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport located in Keahole. The projected completion date for that project is said to be February 2023.
