Children between ages 9 and 12 will have the opportunity to be creative while learning about the phases of the moon during the four-week Youth Summer Art Experience: Na Kaulana Mahina: The Phases of the Moon, Program B.
Classes will be taught by Puakea Forester, Avalon Paradea, Angaea Cuna and Devora Kalma every weekday from Monday, June 7, to Friday, July 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A parent orientation will be conducted on Friday, June 4, for parents “to review the digital platform, expectations, preparedness and Q&A. This orientation is mandatory for all parents and/or guardians of the students to attend.”
“As part of our goal to foster a strong fibers program as an intimate way for us to reconnect to our ‘aina, we have invited a host of Hawaii island artists who will take our keiki on a journey, exploring a range of ‘aina-based projects inspired by our island cultures and the cycles of the moon,” Donkey Mill Art Center said. “Young artists will learn about Mahina the moon, her stories, her songs, the patterns invoked by her many phases, and her favorite pastime: beating beautiful kapa.”
Various organizations and individual donors support the summer 2021 youth education programs, including the Atherton Family Foundation, Kukio Community Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation, The Mary Silverwood Fund and Roberts Foundation.
The Donkey Mill Art Center -- which offers diverse classes, workshops and events for artists of all levels -- is a community art center serving West Hawaii at their facility in Holualoa. They are focused on creativity, community, diversity and process as the guiding values and use education and experience as vehicles to help people of all ages become creative, conscious and healthy human beings.
