In Hawaii, celebrations of culture are highly anticipated events, which give both natives and visitors something to look forward to; the fourth annual Hawaii Kuauli Pacific & Asia Cultural Festival is a prime example.

However, the celebrations will look a little different this year. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the festivities will be held virtually on Friday, June 11, and Saturday, June 12, on both Facebook and YouTube at 4:45 p.m. HST, beginning with the live opening ceremony and followed by two afternoons of events.

"The festival is a culturally based experience for both local residents and visitors. It is organized as a multigenerational effort, including members of the community from all spheres of influence -- providing them with a platform to showcase the gifts and talents of those cultures present in Hawaii," according to the festival's About Us page.

Despite its virtual setting this year, the festival's mission continues to be providing a platform for Hawaiians to come together to share in the pride of their heritage while educating others.

"The Hawaii Kuauli Pacific & Asia Cultural Festival will provide education to the general public about the vast diversity of cultures that reside within the County of Hawaii. This newly acquired knowledge, received throughout the event, will give individuals a greater understanding and appreciation of this island. In addition, it will contribute in developing unity among our community and within families. Attendees will begin to see the strengths and beauty in our differences," according to the festival's website.

The festival is also an opportunity for the younger generation of islanders to learn about the significance of their culture and the importance of continuing to uphold cultural traditions for generations to come.

In celebration of the different cultures, the festival's events include dance performances, arts and crafts, a fashion show, a culinary tasting, a fireknife competition and more.

The event is hosted by Hawaii Pacific & Asia Cultural Celebrations (HIPACC), an umbrella organization for various Hawaii Island festivals.
