The County of Hawaii, including Hilo and Kailua-Kona, has dozens of permanent and temporary positions open and available for job seekers immediately.
Jobs open in Kailua-Kona include civil engineer, wastewater plant maintenance mechanic, building plans examiner, equipment operator, waterworks construction project inspector, assistant plumbing inspector, assistant electrical inspector, legal clerk and building inspector aide.
Available positions in Hilo include civil engineer, mechanical engineer, highway superintendent, financial and compliance supervisor, housing program supervisor, building plans examiner, construction equipment mechanic, project specialist, workers' compensation claims specialist, planner, architectural drafting technician and recreation technician.
The county is also hiring school crossing guards throughout the island.

Those who apply for jobs with the county are referred to the hiring department or agency in the order of their examination score and availability for employment, and then an applicant is selected based on the merit system principle, the County of Hawaii website explains.
If applicants are not immediately selected for a job, they will be kept on the eligible list for a minimum of six months for future employment consideration, according to the County of Hawaii.
In order to apply, applicants must be citizens, nationals or permanent resident aliens of the U.S., or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the U.S.
For applicants hired from out of state, they must become residents of the state within 30 days after beginning their employment and as a condition of eligibility for continued employment.
