The University of Hawaii (UH) at Mānoa's Shidler College of Business and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd., (JAL) has partnered to improve opportunities for focusing on human resource development through innovation for the students of the university.

The organizations signed a "Memorandum of Understanding" during a ceremony at UH Mānoa on July 20.

“We are thrilled for the opportunity to collaborate with Japan Airlines,” Shidler College of Business Dean Vance Roley said, according to the University of Hawaii. “Given Hawaii’s rich historical ties to Japan, coupled with Hawaii being a premier destination for Japanese visitors, this is a synergistic alignment. We look forward to working with JAL and providing unique opportunities to our students.”

UH and JAL will be collaborating on the following plans, including creating a pilot program that will consider commercialization to help solve social issues or enhance customer value; implementing a travel-centered mobile app and conducting joint research on database marketing and commercialization; collaborating with TRUE (an initiative launched by the Hawaii Executive Collaborative, which aims to tech-enable local businesses) on events that promote the activities of start-ups and build new business opportunities, the University of Hawaii reported.

They also aim to establish a human resource development internship program at the university that would offer internships for the students at various JAL offices in the U.S. (JAL Hawaii branch and Silicon Valley Investment and Innovation Group) and Japan (JAL Innovation Lab).

Japan Airlines was founded in 1951 and became the first international airline in the country, according to the university's website. It now reaches 405 airports in 66 countries and regions.
