Fishing tournament, Sunday farmers market, arts-and-crafts and Scrabble are all on the Big Island this weekend

While Hawaii has opened to travelers and visitors to experience the state’s tourist spots and culture, Big Island locals can also enjoy various events happening now.

This weekend, events are happening in Kaahumanu Place, Kailua-Kona (61st Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament); 99-500 Salt Lake Boulevard, Aiea (Aloha Stadium Craft and Gift Fair); 155 West Kawili Street, Hilo (Hilo Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event); 54-3876 Akoni Pule Highway, Kapaau (Reiki 1st Degree Certification); 75-5737 Kuakini Highway, Kailua (Traditional Japanese Reiki 1st Degree); 15-2929 Pahoa Village Road, Pāhoa (Scrabble at the Lava Shack); and 44-2600 Mamalahoa Highway, Waimea (Farmers Market at Hamakua Harvest).   

“Built on prestige, trophies and strict International Game Fish Association (IGFA) rules for world records, HIBT attracts elite fishing enthusiasts from around the world,” HubHawaii stated.

On Friday, Aug. 6, locals may choose to participate in the 61st Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, which will run until Sunday, Aug. 8, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Or visit Aloha Stadium Craft and Gift Fair, which runs through Sunday, Oct. 17, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“Spend the day at the Aloha Stadium shopping Made in Hawaii handcrafted products from local crafters and vendors,” HubHawaii added.

Saturday, Aug. 7, is a jam-packed day with these one-time events: Hilo Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event (7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.), Reiki 1st Degree Certification (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.), Traditional Japanese Reiki 1st Degree (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Scrabble at the Lava Shack happens every Saturday, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“Within each of us is a healer waiting to be acknowledged and to be nurtured,” HubHawaii invites the community to attend Reiki 1st Degree Certification.

The Farmers Market at Hamakua Harvest is held every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Apart from the fresh local produce, the event also offers live music and welcomes “nice, leashed dogs” if families want to bring their fur babies.
