The County of Hawaii Department of Environmental Management will be holding a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event this Saturday.

Those interested in disposing of hazardous waste can do so at the Waiakea High School student parking lot located at 155 West Kawili Street in Hilo. The event will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is free to the public.

The hazardous waste to be collected includes automotive fluids, chemicals, poisons and other hazardous household wastes. A complete list of acceptable products can be found on the County of Hawaii Department of Environmental Management website.

Electronic waste and latex paint will not be accepted.

Social-distancing rules (6-foot distancing) will be applied for the event, and those dropping off household hazardous waste should remain in their vehicle, unless told otherwise by authorized event personnel. Participants should wear face masks as well.

The organizers of the event are asking people coming to drop off hazardous waste to place the items in their trunk or truck bed before arriving at the school.

The trunk should be unlocked or be opened remotely. Vehicles without a trunk or truck bed can still attend the event, as long as the hazardous waste material is placed in a vacant backseat with the door unlocked.

There will be no container returns, and any containers brought to the event should be disposable.

Attendees should label their items, if possible, so that personnel can distinguish between items being disposed of and other personal items that the motorist may have in their truck bed or trunk.

Anyone who is feeling ill or showing potential symptoms of COVID-19 is discouraged from attending the event.

Parties who need auxiliary aid or service for effective communication (including language interpreting) or an alteration of policies or procedures to participate in this event may contact Chris at 961-8554 as soon as possible.
