A local nonprofit will be hosting a fundraiser car wash at the Ohana Fuels gas station, located at 26 Kekela Street in Hilo, to help homeless keiki.

Project Hawaii, Inc., is the host of the car wash and their mission is to help Hawaiian children out of poverty.

The organization states that it reaches out to the children who are in dire need of services in order to provide a possibility of improving their situation. The nonprofit strives to serve those who cannot obtain access to other available resources.

“Our keiki live in poverty-stricken situations and substandard housing spread across the islands,” according to Project Hawaii, Inc. "Some live along the water's edge in tents or high in the mountains in abandoned cars or substandard makeshift shelters. Most live without running water or electricity and often go to bed without having a single meal. Many live without the simple basics of a blanket for warmth or a pillow for comfort.”

The car wash event will be held Saturday, Aug. 7., between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased beforehand. Those who can’t attend the event can still help the cause by visiting Project Hawaii, Inc., to donate.

Donations will help the organization feed children during their summer educational camp, along with helping to send them back to school with the proper supplies so that they can succeed.

Project Hawaii, Inc., provides essential services and outreach to over 1,600 homeless children throughout the year across the islands of Hawaii, Oahu and Maui, according to the group's website.
