The University of Hawaii (UH) hosted a virtual forum on Oct. 6 about the draft of a new Maunakea Master Plan.
The two-hour forum answered questions about the proposed plan for the UH-managed lands on Maunakea.
“Everyone has a legitimate interest in what happens to these lands and how they are utilized,” UH Hilo Center for Maunakea Stewardship Executive Director Greg Chun in the Sept. 12 announcement on the draft of the new plan, according to Big Island Now. “We strongly encourage everyone to play a role in this master plan’s development and tell us what they think.”
The draft of the new Master Plan for the University of Hawaii Maunakea Lands, "E Ō I Ka Leo (Listen to the Voice)," will help align “land-use decisions, management actions and educational programs that strengthen a sense of, and connection to, the mauna,” University of Hawaii News reported.
There were over 50 questions submitted and answered by the forum panelists. Chun, along with Director at the UH Institute for Astronomy Doug Simons and Jim Hayes from Planning Solutions, Inc., the land-use firm contracted by UH to help develop the new master plan, were the panelists at the virtual forum.
The community is encouraged to review the plan and provide comments through Tuesday, Oct. 26, by visiting the Maunakea Master Plan website. Comments can be provided through an online commenting tool, an online general comment form, through voice mail by calling 1-800-756-0902, or postal mail that can be sent to University of Hawaii, Government Relations Office, Administrative Services Building 1, Room 101, 2442 Campus Road, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822.
