People who have substance abuse problems face a lot of hurdles while they are on their journey of recovery, especially when it comes to transitioning back to normal life in society.

Health and Wellness Essentials of Hawaii is an organization that helps exactly those people get back on their feet with transitional/independent housing in Kailua-Kona.

"We currently have a client who resides with us who has obtained employment and is currently enrolled in a program to become a chef," James Robertson, director of operations at Health and Wellness of Hawaii, told Big Island Times when asked to share the experience of any particular person who has used this program.

Health and Wellness Essentials of Hawaii's overall goal is to assist those afflicted with substance abuse by providing life skills training, meals, transportation, social, recreational and even vocational activities.

According to their website, the organization provides transitional housing, offering a safe, respectful and supportive home-like environment as residents learn how to become self-supportive. They also work with individuals with special needs, co-occurring disorders, HIV/AIDS and seniors. The organization is committed to making a difference in the local community.

Health and Wellness Essentials of Hawaii is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and opportunities to donate are available through their website.
