Russia continued its attack on Ukraine throughout the weekend, after it invaded the country by land, sea and air, killing hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians and ominously touching off a pitched battle at the highly radioactive area around Chernobyl, which was the site of a nuclear accident in 1986.

Rep. Kaiali'i Kahele (D-HI) took to Twitter to voice his support for the people and government of Ukraine.

"The United States and its allies will stand united with the people and government of Ukraine. We must hold (Russian President Vladimir) Putin accountable for the unjustified violation of Ukrainian sovereignty. I’m praying for the millions of innocent civilians caught in the crosshairs," Kahele tweeted on Feb. 24.

Russian special forces and paratroopers were inching closer to the capital city of Kyiv by Friday. However, Ukrainian forces have managed to keep control of the city, according to a report The New York Times.

The news outlet reported that former heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, was ready to defend the looming invasion from the Russians by defending the city with weapons.

Thus far, the Russian invasion has led to thousands of women and children leaving the country by train or car, heading toward neighboring Poland, according to the New York Times. Men between the ages of 18 and 60 have been prohibited from leaving the country. "This regulation will remain in effect for the period of the legal regime of martial law," according to The Ukraine State Border Guard Service.
