Law enforcement officials in Hawaii are searching for an inmate who escaped from the Waiawa Correctional Facility on May 14, Toni Schwartz, public information officer for the Hawaii Department of Public Safety, said.

Manuel Kuailani, 44, and Desmond Puu, 41, both escaped from the facility by climbing over a barbed-wire fence, according to a news release from the governor's office. Staff members ordered a lockdown of the facility. They searched the surrounding area and immediately called the Honolulu Police Department and sheriffs. Shortly after the incident, Puu voluntarily turned himself in, but Kuailani is still on the loose.

Kuailani is described as 5'8" tall and weighing 160 pounds; he has brown hair and brown eyes, the news release noted. He was imprisoned for burglary charges. His next parole hearing was scheduled for October; he now faces an escape charge.

Waiawa Correctional Facility is a minimum-security, camp-style prison that houses incarcerated male inmates in dorms.

The inmates at the facility are allowed to participate in educational and substance abuse treatment programs to prepare them for transition into the furlough program or release, according to the news release.
