Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) and her colleagues introduced a resolution last week recognizing June as Pride Month, according to a press release from the senator's office.

Hirono said that much has been done to level the playing field when it comes to rights for LGBTQ+ people.

"During Pride Month, we celebrate the right of every person to live as their full and authentic self," she said. "We’ve made great progress in advancing equity and justice for LGBTQ+ people, but amid a rise in anti-LGBTQ+ policies & rhetoric, it's clear our work is far from over."

While recognizing the progress made, Hirono confirmed that there is much yet to do from an equity standpoint.

The resolution, passed on June 2, highlights the contributions that LGBTQ+ individuals have made to American society. It noted several major milestones in the fight for equity for LGBTQ+ individuals and noted that there is still work to do to achieve full equality.

In the resolution, Democrats warned of the impending Roe v. Wade reversal and what it could mean for LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those who wish to enter into a same-sex marriage. Without the precedent of Roe v. Wade, the right to marry could be at risk, Democrats said.

"The U.S. Supreme Court’s pending decision to overturn Roe v. Wade could potentially undermine and erode other constitutional rights also grounded in privacy, including the right for same-sex couples to marry or engage in consensual relationships without the risk of criminal prosecution," the press release said.

Senate Democrats re-introduced the Equality Act in 2021. The legislation is aimed at ensuring civil rights for LGBTQ+ people and prohibiting discrimination as a result of sexual orientation or gender identity.
