The East Hawaii Cultural Center has opened entries for the 33rd annual Trash Show “to lower carbon footprint.”

The Trash Show will run Oct. 7-Nov. 25 and encourages artists to reduce waste when creating and to promote a healthy attitude toward preserving the island’s landscape and environment. Artists must submit original pieces and must currently live on the Big Island. The event seeks to demonstrate an educational perspective on lowering the carbon footprint on Big Island.

The Trash Show spurs local artists to use recycled materials and “rethink the shop and drop mentality,” said Monique Ortiz, secretary and administrator for the East Hawaii Cultural Center. Entries for the show are due Oct. 1.

“With this exhibition we hope to educate and increase the understanding of the island’s socioeconomic landscape and ecosystem, to encourage artists and viewers to re-think the shop and drop mentality, and to stimulate our brains and hearts to find ways in which we may lower the carbon footprint for our islands,” Ortiz said.

The EHCC’s mission is to offer a platform for artists of all backgrounds to provide a chance to display their art and allow the opportunity “for inquiry into their experience and histories,” according to the EHCC website.

The EHCC seeks to provide equal opportunity for artistic expression as well as displaying the diverse nature of Hawaiian culture, specifically on Big Island. The center's team is made up of volunteers and board members, and the center welcomes donations to maintain its exhibits and for future events.

Artists' entries cannot be from a previous-juried exhibit. The event attempts to advocate original art, that applies used or recycled materials to demonstrate the importance of ecological preservation.

Each artist is allowed to submit up to three pieces with a $20 entry fee. A jury will view and judge pieces Oct. 1 from 1 to 2 p.m. Depending on the amount of entries, winners and honorable mentions will be awarded at the opening of the event Oct. 7.
