Elaine Yaeko Sumida, 76, of Hilo, died March 3, 2023, at home. Born in Kohala, she was a retired school teacher and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, Buddhist Women’s Association and Hui O Wahine FCE. Visitation from 3:30-5 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2023, at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo; memorial service at 5 p.m. Casual attire. No flowers. Survived by son, Derek (Jennifer) Sumida of New York; daughter, Carie Sumida of Honolulu; brother, Larry (Hattie) Kanda of Pearl City, Oahu; sisters-in-law, Beverly Kanda of Honokaa, Audrey Sumida of Kaneohe, Oahu; brothers-in-law, Roy (Marilyn) Sumida of California, Cyrus (Myra) Sumida of Pahala; three grandchildren, numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
