The Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i will offer free legal information presentations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Kaʻū District Gym Multipurpose Room. Attorney Scott Shishido hopes this event will benefit the community by providing information that isn’t usually readily accessible.

"Our goal is to try to make this information more accessible to members of the community, especially for those who may not live near our Hilo or Kona offices," said Scott Shishido. "During stakeholder interviews, we repeatedly heard that it would be nice if Legal Aid was out in the community more; this is an effort to respond to those requests."

According to a press release, the topics that will be discussed include: divorce, custody, visitation, and child support at 11 a.m.; Kūpuna legal issues, including wills, advanced healthcare directives, powers of attorney, and guardianships at noon; vital documents and health insurance at 12:30 p.m.; SSI/SSDI at 1 p.m.; and housing issues, including landlord-tenant, foreclosure, and reverse mortgage at 1:30 p.m.

No appointments are needed for any of these presentations, and every one of them is open to the public, the Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i press release stated. However, the Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i asks attendees to keep in mind that these presentations are purely informational, and are not legal advice in any way. There will be staff members on-site to assist with submitting an application for attendees who want to apply for legal aid services.

It was noted in the press release that the event will take place at the Kaʻū District Gym Multipurpose Room, 96-1219 Kamani St., Pāhala, Hawai‘i.

According to its website, The Legal Aid Society of Hawai'i is a nonprofit, public interest law firm that is "dedicated to achieving fairness and justice through legal advocacy, outreach, and education for those in need." One of its goals is to make the legal system less intimidating to the average person, as shown with this legal presentation event.
