HONOLULU — Hawaiʻi judges and justices recently participated in National Judicial Outreach Week, aiming to promote a better understanding of the rule of law and the importance of education among students and the general public.
First Circuit District Court Judge Timothy E. Ho shared insights with students at Nimitz Elementary School during a career day, emphasizing how education can prepare them for future careers in the legal field. He was joined by Circuit Court Judge Faʻauuga L. Toʻotoʻo, who engaged with students from Hilo High School.
On Maui, Second Circuit Chief Judge Peter T. Cahill and District Court Judge Christopher M. Dunn interacted with the community at the Lahaina District Courthouse, hosting an informal talk story session during the opening day of the Holoholo Bookmobile.
In Hawaiʻi island, Third Circuit District Family Judge Darien Ching Nagata spoke to students at Keaʻau Middle School, while on Kauaʻi, Fifth Circuit District Family Judge Gregory H. Meyers engaged with students from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School and Business Law students from Kauaʻi Community College and Windward Community College.
Justice Lisa M. Ginoza addressed ninth graders at Kalaheo High School, discussing the Hawaiʻi court system, the selection of judges, and the importance of juries. She also touched on the famous Massie cases, resonating with students reading “To Kill a Mockingbird” and encouraging them to pre-register to vote once they turn 16. Justice Ginoza also interacted with students from Hilo High School, providing insights into the government system.
Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald engaged in a question-and-answer session with students from Mokapu Elementary School at the Judiciary History Center in Aliʻiōlani Hale, highlighting the historical significance of the courthouse and the Supreme Court's commitment to fairness and impartiality.
National Judicial Outreach Week, established by the American Bar Association in 2017, encourages judges to connect with their communities and educate the public on the role of courts in upholding the rule of law, providing justice, ensuring transparency, and safeguarding citizens' legal rights.
