Hawai‘i Police Department (HPD) released its monthly update on fentanyl-related arrests and recoveries for February 2024, shedding light on the ongoing battle against illicit drugs in the region.

During February 2024, HPD reported a total of eight fentanyl-related arrests, with two arrests in east Hawai‘i and six in west Hawai‘i. Additionally, authorities seized a total of 105.84 grams of illicit fentanyl, with 0.24 grams confiscated in east Hawai‘i and 105.6 grams in west Hawai‘i.

The Drug Enforcement Agency highlights the potency of fentanyl, stating that "just 2 milligrams of illicit fentanyl, equal to a couple grains of salt, is a lethal dose." The quantity of fentanyl recovered by HPD last month was alarming, as it was enough to potentially cause harm to a significant number of individuals. HPD noted that the 105.84 grams of illicit fentanyl seized in February 2024 could have been fatal for 52,920 Hawai‘i Island residents.

In addition to the fentanyl seizures, HPD also recovered 142 fentanyl pills during their operations, with 42 pills retrieved in east Hawai‘i and 100 in west Hawai‘i.

The Hawai‘i Police Department remains dedicated to addressing drug-related issues on the island and apprehending individuals involved in the distribution and sale of illegal narcotics. The prevalence of illicit fentanyl in counterfeit pills has become a major concern, with criminal networks exploiting this synthetic opioid, leading to devastating consequences.

For individuals seeking fentanyl safety tips and information on recognizing fentanyl poisoning, HPD directs them to visit their website. Furthermore, HPD encourages the community to report any information related to illicit drug activities or vice crimes through their anonymous tip hotline, emphasizing the confidentiality of the provided information and its importance in aiding investigations.
