The Hawai‘i Department of Health's Maui Food Safety Branch issued a red placard to Kings Chinese BBQ 5 in Wailuku after confirming a cockroach infestation on April 4, 2024. During an initial complaint inspection following an anonymous complaint, it was found that there were at least 25 live cockroaches on food storage shelving and refrigeration units at the establishment. The presence of juveniles and egg cases indicated an active infestation.

"DOH Food Safety Branch instructed the establishment to immediately close and a red placard was issued," stated the department.

The establishment, operated by Kings Chinese BBQ 5 LLC, has a history of noncompliance with pest control and prevention. Due to this and the lack of managerial control to address the infestation, the DOH Food Safety Branch took action to ensure public safety.

"Prior to the establishment being allowed to re-open, DOH Food Safety Branch is requiring a professional pest control company to establish a treatment plan and the removal of food debris and grease from kitchen equipment," the department explained.

A follow-up inspection is scheduled for Monday, April 8, 2024, to assess the progress in eradicating the cockroach infestation and implementing pest prevention measures.

The DOH Food Safety Branch emphasized its commitment to protecting the health of Hawai‘i residents and visitors through education and regulation of food establishments. The branch conducts routine health inspections and investigates foodborne illnesses to prevent future occurrences.
