The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) has reported that "currently, no one is hospitalized" following the investigation of two confirmed cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, on Hawaiʻi Island. The cases have been identified in two separate households without travel-related exposures, both of which have school-age children attending local schools in different geographical areas of the island.

According to the DOH, the newer cases on Hawaiʻi Island are unrelated to a previous cluster of five confirmed cases of whooping cough in Oʻahu visitors in February 2024, which resulted in hospitalization of a child. From 2019 to 2023, a total of 90 confirmed and probable whooping cough cases were reported in Hawaiʻi, including 28 cases linked to three outbreaks.

"Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by bacteria," with symptoms like severe coughing fits and a characteristic "whoop" sound during breathing. The disease can lead to serious complications, especially in infants. Individuals experiencing symptoms or breathing difficulties are advised to seek medical attention promptly.

The best preventive measure against whooping cough is to "stay up to date with recommended whooping cough vaccines," such as DTaP and Tdap. Vaccination coverage rates in Hawai‘i have shown improvement but still lag behind the national average, with an increase in vaccination exemptions compared to previous years.

Stressing the importance of routine vaccinations in preventing outbreaks, health officials urge parents to consult with healthcare providers about any concerns regarding vaccinations. In case of a diagnosis, following prescribed antibiotics and practicing good hygiene measures are crucial in containing the spread of the bacteria causing whooping cough.
