HONOLULU — The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health (DOH) and its partners are gearing up to celebrate Mental Health Month in May, urging Hawaiʻi residents to promote mental health care acceptance and combat discrimination that hinders treatment-seeking. The initiative involves various divisions and community partners to advocate for equity and inclusion for individuals with mental health concerns.

As stated by Keli Acquaro, acting administrator for CAMHD, the focus is on transitioning from mere awareness of children's mental health issues to full acceptance. Acquaro emphasizes the importance of acknowledging mental health concerns as a natural part of the human experience and creating supportive environments for young people.

Dr. Courtenay Matsu, acting administrator for AMHD, highlights the pressing need for accessible and culturally sensitive mental health services, especially in the aftermath of recent disasters and tragedies.

Mental Health Month aims to initiate conversations about mental well-being, a crucial public health matter affecting individuals of all ages. Statistics reveal the prevalence of mental health issues among different age groups, emphasizing the significance of addressing these challenges.

To raise awareness, the community is invited to participate in the "May Is Mental Health Month: Day at the Capitol" event on May 1 at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol. The event will feature various service providers and organizations advocating for mental health initiatives.

The color green symbolizing hope, strength, and support for individuals with mental health concerns will be displayed at several buildings across Oʻahu and Kauaʻi throughout May.

For those in need of support or resources related to mental health, Hawai‘i CARES 988 offers free 24/7 counseling services for emotional crises, suicide prevention, and substance use assistance. Additional resources can be accessed through Aloha United Way 211.
