The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health (DOH) Food and Drug Branch (FDB) has issued a recall alert for Sun Noodle's S&S Cup Saimin frozen saimin products. The company is implementing this voluntary recall due to the presence of an undeclared egg allergen in the product.
Sun Noodle's recall was prompted by the discovery that the ingredient label does not disclose that the product may contain egg white powder, which is an allergen. The frozen products are sold in ready-to-heat cups, including a fishcake garnish containing the egg allergen. The recalled product has been distributed to local retailers throughout Hawaiʻi since May 2023.
Egg allergy symptoms can appear within minutes to hours after consuming foods containing eggs. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and vary among individuals. These may include skin inflammation or hives; nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing; digestive symptoms like cramps, nausea, and vomiting; and asthma signs such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath. In rare cases, an egg allergy can cause anaphylaxis - a reaction that narrows the airways and can block breathing.
Consumers with an egg allergy or severe sensitivity should inform their health care provider if they have consumed the recalled product. If any signs of anaphylaxis occur, immediate administration of an epinephrine autoinjector is advised followed by calling 911 or your local emergency number. According to Sun Noodle, there have been no reports of illness or adverse events related to the recalled product so far.
The DOH FDB urges consumers to check for the lot number on the lid to verify if they have purchased the recalled product. Consumers with anyone in their household having an egg allergy are advised not to open and consume the recalled saimin to prevent exposure and potential symptoms.
