The Hawai‘i State Department of Health (DOH) has issued a reminder to the public to remain vigilant due to high levels of COVID-19 activity in the state. According to the DOH Respiratory Disease Dashboard, COVID-19 disease activity is currently at a high level, indicated by the red status. This suggests that the virus is circulating more extensively compared with historical trends.

In response, the DOH continues to monitor this elevated activity and has provided several recommendations:

1. Individuals who have not yet received the 2023-24 COVID-19 vaccine are urged to get vaccinated. Those eligible for an additional dose, such as adults aged 65 and over or individuals with compromised immune systems, should also ensure they are up-to-date with their vaccinations. The DOH states that maintaining vaccination lowers risks of severe illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19.

2. People feeling unwell should stay home and avoid contact with others until they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication and their symptoms are improving. Upon resuming usual activities, it is recommended to wear a mask indoors around others for an additional five days.

3. Wearing a well-fitting mask indoors can help protect oneself and others, particularly if recovering from COVID-19 symptoms.

4. Staying outdoors or in well-ventilated areas can reduce transmission of COVID-19.

5. Practicing good hygiene is essential; this includes covering coughs and sneezes, cleaning frequently touched surfaces, and washing hands often.

6. Taking a COVID-19 test when experiencing symptoms can be crucial for determining whether treatment is necessary. Antiviral treatments for both COVID-19 and influenza are available and most effective when taken soon after symptom onset.
