Hawaii County Hāmākua Community Development Plan Action Committee met May 8.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

CALL TO ORDER

Chair David Meyer called the Hāmākua Community Development Plan (CDP) Action Committee (AC) to order at 5:03 p.m. A quorum was established with six members in attendance. This meeting was held in person at the Kula’imano Community Center and via the Zoom online platform.

ROLL CALL

Members Present (in person): Richard Bidleman, Tawn Keeney, Brad Kurokawa, Robert Nishimoto (late in 5:05 p.m), David Meyer (Chair) and Mahealani Maikui (Vice-Chair).

County Staff Present (in person): Maryam Palma and Jessica Lahip.

Also in Attendance: Heather Kimball (County Council)

There were approximately seven members of the public in attendance.

Committee Member Richard Bidleman motioned to approve the April 8, 2024 meeting minutes. Vice-Chair Mahealani Maikui seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

PUBLIC COMMENT ON AGENDA ITEMS:

There were no public comments on the agenda item.

BUSINESS

1. Discussion of Implementation Priorities

The committee discussed the implementation of action priorities. Each committee member decided to tackle different actions on their own:

• Waipio: Committee member Brad Kurokawa

• Maztac: Committee member Robert Nishiomoto

• Housing & Education: Committee member Richard Bidleman

• CIP & Agriculture Taxes: Chair, David Meyer

• PONC, Fire Preparedness, Trails and Public Notices: Committee member Tawn Keeney

• Community Action 3 (Develop a coastal resource management plan as part of watershed management plans) & Community Action 4 (Support the organization of a community-based hui for the fisher people of the Hāmākua Coast): Vice-Chair Mahealani Maikui

County Official Heather Kimball spoke on agricultural land and farm usage. This item concluded 6:26 p.m.

• County Official Heather Kimball provided updates

• Committee member Brad Kurokawa announced that the legislature appropriation received $2.1 million for Hakalau School lead remediation

ADJOURNMENT

Committee Member Richard Bidleman motioned to adjourn the meeting. Vice-Chair Mahealani 68 Maikui seconded the motion. An all-in-favor voice vote carried the motion unanimously. The 69 meeting was adjourned at 6:54 p.m.
