WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senators Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) and Brian Schatz (D-HI), along with U.S. Representatives Ed Case (D-HI) and Jill Tokuda (D-HI), issued a statement regarding President Joe Biden’s new supplemental appropriations request, which includes funding for disaster recovery on Maui and nationwide.

"Almost a year since the devastating fires on Maui, the people of Lahaina still need help. Their lives are nowhere near back to normal and it will take sustained support from the federal government to get them fully back on their feet. President Biden’s new supplemental appropriations request is an important and necessary investment in them and disaster survivors across the country. Now Congress needs to pass this funding quickly and get people the help they urgently need."

President Biden’s new request for disaster response funding includes a $4 billion increase from the request made last October. This $4 billion request encompasses an additional $700 million for the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program, which aims to continue supporting Maui—and other states affected by disasters—in their recovery efforts following last August's wildfires.
