The Hawai‘i State Department of Health (DOH) Harm Reduction Services Branch has announced Bryan Chin as the recipient of the 2024 Suzanne Richmond-Crum Award. The award will be presented during the World AIDS Day ceremony on December 1, recognizing Chin for his significant contributions to HIV services in Hawai‘i.

The award honors Suzanne Richmond-Crum, who served over a decade as director of the Hawai‘i Seropositivity and Medical Management Program before her passing in 2004. It is given annually to individuals in Hawai‘i who demonstrate outstanding competence and compassion in providing HIV services.

Bryan Chin, a nurse practitioner with the Maui AIDS Foundation (MAF), has been serving the Maui County community since 2014. Initially a medical case manager for people living with HIV, he pursued advanced nursing degrees to become a clinical provider. Chin is known for his dedication to patient care, ensuring that patients are informed, supported, and comfortable in challenging situations. He advocates for accessible healthcare within Maui County through MAF’s free sexual health services and programs like PrEP and the Bridge Program.

Steven F. Hire, President of the Board of Directors at MAF, remarked on Chin's empathy and commitment: “I first met Bryan when I was executive director of Maui AIDS Foundation (MAF). From my first interactions with him I was impressed with his empathy, compassion and commitment to HIV/AIDS."

World AIDS Day serves as an opportunity to remember those lost to HIV and support those living with it. The event will take place at Capitol Modern, Hawai‘i State Art Museum in Honolulu at 5 p.m., where the public can join in commemorating World AIDS Day and celebrate the presentation of this annual award.
